| Banding |
|
| For the Exhibition Budgerigar it is necessary to slip a closed leg band on your
chicks leg between 5 to 10 days old. |
| These bands are made of aluminium and will
have a club identification, year and number stamped on it. |
| Rings can be
purchased through your club and will be registered in your name and this will
allow you to participate |
| in all club shows. |
|
| The leg band may be put on either the right or the left leg. Taking the chick
in your hand bunching three toes |
| together, leaving the smallest one free. The
toes of a budgerigar are jointed so that one toe may be pushed either |
| to the
front or back. The band slips easily over three toes and then the smallest is
pulled out to free it from the |
| band. If the band should not move smoothly across
the joint, use a little oil or water to help the ring slip over. |
|
| Usually two birds, sometimes three, from the one nest can be banded at the
same time, but because the birds are |
| of same size, repeated checking is
necessary making sure you keep a close watch that the ring has remained on all |
|
the chicks. When you're doing your daily checks make sure they have their rings.
It has been known for a ring to |
| slip of the chicks foot and will be found
lying in the nest box and must be replaced. |
|
| The final stage and it cannot be emphasized enough is to keep careful records
of all your band numbers. |
